Closure Statement - Monday 30th September 2019

To Members,

This is a tough one but regretfully, the time has come for me to close the doors on SimBuddy.

This has not been an easy decision to make. A huge amount of effort has gone into developing SimBuddy, and I've dedicated three years of my life to the website, but, unfortunately, it has started to take its toll.

Running the website has been a 24/7/365 responsibility which has often been challenging. I'm the only developer, I have a full-time job outside of SimBuddy, and it's becoming increasingly difficult for me to dedicate the time required to keep things going.

I put roughly 30-40 hours a week into developing SimBuddy and a further 40+ hours into my day job. As you can imagine, this is getting pretty difficult to maintain, and it's having a huge impact on my life.

I wanted to share how I feel in hope you all understand why I have made this difficult decision.

I love flight sim, I've enjoyed creating SimBuddy, but it's become untenable for me to continue so unfortunately, it is time for me to call it a day.

I know some of you may be disappointed in the closure of SimBuddy and I can only apologise. I know you've put a lot of effort into earning your points, building your airlines and working your way up the ranks but I hope you understand my reasons for closing the website. I'm truly sorry it has come to this. It's genuinely been a tough decision to make.

So what now?

The development of SimBuddy will stop as of today, and from today, it won't be possible to subscribe or register a new SimBuddy account. Existing members can continue to fly and use SimBuddy (although I appreciate the incentive to do so is now significantly less), and members with current Premium accounts will keep their Premium status until the closure of the site and at no further cost.

Refunds & Subscriptions

All paid subscriptions will be cancelled in the next 7 days so no further payments can be taken from your bank account.

A refund of ¬£4.99 will be provided to every Premium subscriber who has a current and active subscription as of the day this announcement was made (Monday 30th September 2019). You will receive an email receipt from Stripe confirming a refund has been processed. Please allow a further 5-10 days for your refund to appear in your bank account.

You can cancel your Premium subscription yourself via the Profile section within the Members area but please note that a refund will not automatically generate. You'll need to contact me through Support so I can manually process the refund.

Closure Dates & Process

The website will continue to operate until Saturday 12th October 2019 (ZULU).

Access to the member's area will be turned off on Saturday 12th October 2019 (ZULU). The client will no longer connect, and your flights will no longer be logged. A holding page will replace the website with FAQs and this statement. There may be some downtime during the DNS switch-over.

All personal data will be deleted six months after the closure of the website. No data will be stored online after the 12th October 2019 (ZULU).

All stored backups will be permanently deleted to comply with GDPR. Your personal data will not be sold or passed on to any third parties.

If you would like to close your account and remove all personal data before then, you can do so yourself via the Members Area within the profile management area.

If you are a Premium Subscriber and you delete your personal data, refunds will take longer to process. It is recommended you wait until your refund has been processed (a confirmation email from Stripe has been received) before deleting your personal data.

Our Discord channel will stay active but it may get a re-brand and ownership may be passed on to one of the support team to manage. A final decision hasn't been made yet. We'll update you through Discord in due course.

How to uninstall the client

  1. Before you uninstall the client, make sure you untick "Auto Login when Sim Detected".
  2. Go to Add or Remove Programs
  3. Find the SimBuddy application and uninstall

If SimBuddy continues to try and load when you start your PC (after you've uninstalled), you just need to go to your start up folder and remove the SimBuddy short-cut.

Most start up folders can be found here:

C:\Users\<YOUR USERNAME>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

There are plenty of awesome alternatives for you to use. I highly recommend you check out:

Before I go I would like to give a massive thank you to our fantastic team of volunteers; Clorix, TheMarmaliser and Mejjo. Without them, I could never have done it. I know it sounds like a cliché, but it is so true. These guys have been the backbone of the website, and I can't thank them enough.

Thank you so much to every single member - all 10,000+ of you! Despite my reasons for closing, I've also had a lot of pleasure in creating SimBuddy. I've learnt so much, and there's nothing more rewarding than seeing you all use something that a lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone in to.

Lastly, thank you to all our subscribers. Without you, SimBuddy wouldn't have been able to operate. You're a great bunch, and I genuinely appreciate your contribution and support.

It's a sad day for me, and I'm sorry it's come to this. It's been a fantastic journey, and I thank you all for being a part of it.

Happy flying everyone - see you in the virtual skies.

Georgio, Clorix, TheMarmaliser and Mejjo
